Tag Archive: Colorado Geo Caches

One of the really neat things that I like about Geo caching is the fact that I can go and see places that are near me that I didn’t even know where there.  We have found parks, and creeks and hills, where we never knew they were here.  Yet I have lived here in the state for 2/3rds of my life.  I live in Colorado Springs and one of the best ways to get into the Mountains quick is called Ute Pass.  Back in the day when there was gold mining up there in them hills they would bring it out on trains.  The Mountain had a shelf cut into it for the tracks, and there are a number of tunnels.

As you drive up Ute pass today you can still see where we cut into the mountains years ago.  Many people have been up there and hiked around but I had never been up there.  Until one day my wife suggested that we go find some caches in the mountains.

Geo Cache ID GCJKNE is a great way to see not only the mountains but part of Colorado History, and the best part about it is that it is free.  Its right off Highway 24 and I would recommend that you either take good climbing shoes if you climb up via the way points off the highway or you walk in from beginning of the trail.

Either way this has got to be one of my favorite finds.  If you want to see Colorado you have got to check this out.

Geo on Pikes Peak

If I had to select a weekend not to go camping I think I would pick the 4th of July.  This is one of those weekends where it feels like everyone is heading out to the campgrounds.  I can understand why, it’s a long weekend, or at least it was this year and short of those who feel like they must see the fireworks this is a awesome chance to get out.  In my opinion I bet this is one of the biggest weekends of the year, with Labor Day and Memorial Day just right behind if.

So what did we do this 4th?  Well camping was not on our list.  We try to stay away from people when we can.  So we decided to take a trip up the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, and hit a couple of Geo Caches while we were up there.  There are two of them that are real close to the summit and you can hit before the train leaves to take you back down (about 40 min).

I am a big fan of GeoCaching and if you have not had the chance to try it I would recommend it.  Tomorrow I will post a short note on what it is and how you do it. But the end result is that you are doing a treasure hunt at 14,000 feet.  One of the reasons that I like to Geo Cache is other than the original investment to do this its free.  One of the reasons I include this on the camping blog is I wish more campsites would have Geo Caches.

The first Cache we found was GC16QMT and the second one was GC659F. There are a couple caches more up there but since we took the cog we had very little time before our train left.  End result was we had a great weekend.
