Hooray for warmer weather! Time to pack up those RVs and hit the road for fun in that oh so wonderful summer sun. But as you’re packing up to go and play, don’t forget that warmer weather means it’s time for those bugs to come out too. Mosquitoes have always been annoying and the bumps they leave can itch like there’s no tomorrow, but now they pose an even bigger threat…West Nile virus. West Nile is a virus that can cause serious illness including headache, nausea, body aches and skin rashes, among other things. For folks who have weakened immune systems, West Nile can be fatal. Here are some ways to protect yourself so your fun in the sun isn’t ruined by a bug in a rug:

  1. Mosquitoes are extremely active just before and after dawn and during the dusk hours of the day. Try to avoid being outdoors if possible during these times.
  2. Wear long sleeves and pants when possible.
  3. Use Mosquito repellent that contains DEET.

For use of insect repellent that contains DEET, keep the following in mind:

  • Always apply the repellent to clothing rather than directly on your skin.
  • When applying repellent to others, never spray on the other person directly. Spray on your hands first, and then apply to the other person.
  • Children should not be given repellent containing more than 10% DEET.
  • Reapply repellent every 2-3 hours.

Hope this helps you in keeping those pesky pests away while you enjoy your time on the road!
