Growing up here in Colorado does not mean that I ski. I know its hard to believe, I use to but the knees just don’t take it anymore. Along the same lines it does not mean that I have been to all the tourist things to do here either. My in-laws, we will call the Mom and Dad, made a suggestion that we go and take the lunch train from Canyon City to the Royal Gorge. I have been to the Gorge many times and I even once went to the bottom using the incline. But this was one of the best trips that I have ever had there.

You have your choice between 2 types of dinner cars on the train. We picked the one that did not have the dome. There were 5 in our party and we could go outside onto the open car for all the pictures that we wanted. The first thing I want to mention is that I really was not expecting a lot for the meal, but when we arrived I found I was in for a surprise. The lunch was great. I had the chicken and it had a wonderful sauce on it. We finished the meal with a special cake I believe they called a turtle cake, but it was good no matter what they called it. What I really liked about where we ate was the car itself. They did a great job in keeping it nice, I am not a train expert but from my eye it looked like an old fashion first class diner car. It had everything down to the names on our table.

We were in for a real treat and we did not even come for the food. We took a trip out to the open car where we could look up the sides of the Gorge and it was just breath taking. This history from the way that they use to get water for irrigation is still there today.

Then there is always the view up…

Since it is a little hard to see from this picture but I have included on of the bridge from below it. If I remember correctly it is over 1000 feet above our heads.

Then end result is…

The Gorge is one of the neat things to see here in Colorado, many of us have been on the bridge. But this was my first time on the train. It was priced a little aggressively but the dinner and the service was worth it. If you’re a train lover you will like this trip. The only thing I would have changed would have been to add some beef to the menu.

Oh there is a number of Geo-Caches in the area that if you have the time, check them our. We found one about a quarter mile at the most from the train station. I think there are a number of caches near the rail road but we did not have a chance to go and get them. It’s a 12 mile trip one way.
